Not a good start to 2014 - RIP my sweet girls

Well, despite our best efforts, 2014 has not started out well.  The freezing temps have heaved up the ground around the chicken pen, and caused a gap between the door and the top of the pen.....which, during the middle of the day today...a very unwanted visitor crawled (mink most likely) and promptly killed seven of my sweet girls.

Rest In Peace
my
Dear Girls
My dearest Buttercup...she was sooo sweet and always loved to be held

and Clarice....the soft gray girl to the left of Buttercup

Goodbye to my lovely
Gracie
Gracie was one of my newest girls...just got her this Spring
 and Polly
....as was Polly...she and Gracie always hung out together
......I'll miss you
 Baby......
and poor scaredy girl, Henny Penny.....she must have been terrified....
Henny Penny is in the back with the dark head
and goodbye to our sweet little Bantam....
Minnie...she was our faithful egg sitter...always preferring to sit on everyone's eggs...
Clarice and Minnie

Oh...how I miss them already.
My flock is cut in half....and the coop is so empty...as is my heart.

  6. So sorry to hear of your loss of your girls. I know they were like family to you and your heart is broken. Hang in there, you are going to make it through this time. Have you read Max Lucado's new book, "You are going to make it?". It is really good and it gives so much hope to those of us going through struggles. Take Care and God Bless you and your family. 8. Awww, I'm sorry to hear this! It so hard to loose the little creatures we love. My brother in law has chicks and they had a panther keep getting their chickens. He spent a few nights in the coop with a gun to catch it if you can believe that!

  21. Oh, I know the ache I felt when a fox got my sweet Browning, she had such a personality that I have not been able to replicate with the other ducks. I am so sorry for your loss Wendy, I am sure some folks thing we're goofy but even our "farm" animals have wonderful personalities that are just irreplaceable and they each hold such a special place in our hearts.
